Almost Truth in Television, in fact: there has been research done into devising firearm security systems that utilize biometrics or a chip (mounted on an accessory or even implanted under the skin) to prevent usage of a firearm by anyone but its owner. This is a staple of the stealth genre and is often hand waved/ justified by the items having fingerprint scanners or some other form of user identification.
